- Probably the single most requested Father / Daughter
dance song for weddings of all time
-
Written by Bobby Burke (music) and Horace Gerlach (lyrics) in 1949
- The original vocal recording was done by The Mills
Brothers in January of 1950, and was a #1 hit on the Billboard Charts
- The Mills Brothers consisted of:
- John Mills, Jr. (who became ill during a
performance for King George V and Queen Mary in England. He passed
away as a result of the illness in 1936, and was replaced by father
John Mills Sr.)
- Herbert Mills
- Harry Mills
- Donald Mills
- Also recorded in early 1950 by Dick Todd, his version
reached #11 in February of 1950
- The marketing frenzy created by the song back in the
early 50s was a precursor of things to come. It was used in the wildly
popular Dick Tracy comic book series, and contests were run to find
pictures of cute little girls to use on the covers of the sheet music
-
The most popular version of the song recognized today was done by Al
Martino (born Alfred Cini, 10/7/1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
- Released in 1967,
- Surprisingly enough, Martino's version, while the
most requested today, only reached # 57 on the Billboard chart, although
it reached #2 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart
- The album "Daddy's Little Girl" reached #23 on the
Billboard Magazine albums chart
- Between 1963 and 1975 Martino would chalk up 11 Top
40 hits
- Martino portrayed singer "Johnny Fontaine" in the
1972 movie "The Godfather"
- Prior to his singing career, Martino was in the
Marine Corps, and was wounded in action at Iwo Jima in 1945
- "Daddy's Little Girl" has also been recorded by Eddie
Arnold (1957), Frank Fontaine, Dick Todd, and Michael Bolton
- For those considering the use of this song at their
wedding, be advised it is a waltz, in 3/4 time. You should probably be
a reasonably good dancer, or at least get familiar with the song before
the big day to avoid feeling somewhat ungainly
Daddy's Little Girl - Song Lyrics
You're the end of the rainbow,
My pot of gold,
You're daddy's little girl
To have and hold.
A precious gem
Is what you are,
You're mommy's bright
And shining star.
You're the spirit of Christmas,
My star on the tree,
You're the Easter bunny
To mommy and me.
You're sugar you're spice,
You're everything nice,
And you're daddy's little girl.
You're the end of the rainbow,
My pot of gold,
You're daddy's little girl
To have and hold.
A precious gem
Is what you are,
You're mommy's bright
And shining star.
You're the treasure I cherish
So sparkling and bright,
You were touched by the holy
And beautiful light.
Like angels that sing,
A heavenly thing,
And you're daddy's little girl.
