  • In an interview with Taupin, the song was based on a story which had appeared in Newsweek after the Vietnam war, about a returning veteran who wanted to return to a normal life, but the small town citizens insisted on making him into a war hero, and decides that, in order to put the war behind him, he leaves for Spain
  • Taupin wrote an additional verse that made this clearer, but it was removed when Elton thought the song was already too long
  • The song was a #2 Top 40 hit in 1973
  • It was the 7th of 59 (and still counting) Top 40 hits for this musical superstar
  • The song was also covered by Wilson Phillips in 1991
