  • Originally recorded by Italian pop singer Umberto Tozzi in 1974 as a ballad
  • The best known version was performed by Laura Branigan (born 7/3/57, died 8/26/04)
  • The song went to #2 on the US Billboard Top 40 charts in 1982
  • It was also a #1 hit in Australia, #2 in Canada, and #6 in the UK
  • The song earned Branigan a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1982
  • In later years it was considered Branigan's signature song, the one that launched her career, a career that included 7 Top 40 hits before her untimely death
  • The song was also recorded in French by Sheila B. 
  • Each version of the song (the original Italian, the Branigan version, & the Sheila B.) all have different lyrical meanings, & aren't literal translations
  • Branigan's version of "Gloria" was used in the movie "Flashdance" during the skating scene
  • The soundtrack for the movie Flashdance has sold over 6,000,000 copies in the United States alone, and is one of the most popular soundtrack albums of all time. Unfortunately the song Gloria was not included on the soundtrack album as it was not written specifically for the movie
  • Laura Branigan passed away from a brain aneurysm 8/26/04.  She was only 47 years old
  • A native New Yorker throughout her life, her cremated ashes were spread over Long Island Sound
